Warning signs of appendicitis

It starts as a dull, annoying ache near your belly button. You think it’s indigestion. You reach for an antacid. You lie down, hoping it passes.

As a surgeon, I see this "waiting game" as a descent into a Septic Crisis. Your appendix—a small, finger-shaped pouch at the gateway to your large intestine—is not a useless organ when it’s inflamed. It is a Biological Pressure Cooker. Once it becomes obstructed, the clock starts ticking. You have roughly 48 to 72 hours before the pressure overcomes the tissue wall, leading to a catastrophic rupture that floods your abdominal cavity with toxins.

If you want to survive the Perforation Countdown, you must recognize these 5 Clinical Red Flags before the wall gives way.

1. The "Migrating" Ache (The Classic Pivot)

In the early stages, the pain is vague and centered around the navel. But pay close attention: within hours, the pain physically "moves." It migrates to the Lower Right Quadrant. This is the hallmark of appendicitis. As the inflammation reaches the parietal peritoneum (the lining of your abdominal wall), the pain becomes sharp, localized, and agonizing. If your pain has "traveled," your time is running out.

2. The "McBurney Point" Sensitivity
